Background

As a part of its duty to make necessary investigations of historic and archeological sites, buildings, and objects of exceptional value as commemorating or illustrating the history of the United States for the inspiration and benefit of its people, the NPS, Interior Regions 8, 9, 10, and 12 Preservation Partnerships Program (PWR-PPP) plans to nominate a property as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) related to African American contributions to American history in California. There is a growing body of scholarship on the role of African Americans in the West. African Americans have shaped the cultural and political destiny of our Nation in profound ways and have advanced the tradition of equality under the law, serving as an inspiration to all Americans. There are important places that represent this history in the West, including California.

Please see the attached document for more information about anticipated work and deliverables.
